Which should be proud of among these three definitions? Webmasters usually keep bragging and show off these three definition saying that they are receiving more than 1000 hits per day, thousands of page impressions and hundreds of unique visitors.

While searching for great template plugin and widget on the net, my mind seems to be called by sabahan.com website. I don’t know maybe because we came from the same hometown. Not hometown really, same state actually. Then i found these three gold phrases on his post which i am not so expert with.

So what is the real meaning of each these phrase? Let see what the Guru explain on his website.

What is hits?

A hit is generated when a file is requested and served on your website. Those file can be anything from image file, html file, php file video and so on. Let say there is an HTML file which consist of 12 graphic files in a page. Once it is requested by server and served, by other means they displayed on your monitor, they generate 13 hits. How? 13 hits mean one html file and 12 graphic files. If you had 10 html of page with 12 graphic file each, it will resulted to 130 hits when viewed. What happen when the page is viewed many times at one period? No wonder this hits value could exceed thousands to million per month!

Its getting more revealing, so what is Page Impressions?

Page impression is simply just how many time any page on a site is viewed. Just that. If you open a site such as Themegears.com, a page impression is recorded there. Then when you click a link to any other page on that same site, another page impression is logged. Also the same when you refresh or reload a page. It is simply just how many time the page is displayed. So, should this definition make you proud of you achieved?

This is the best one to show off. What is Unique Visitors?

Unique visitors means how many loyal visitors you have. How can that be? Loyal visitors mean they came back at any of your page within that 24 hours. Another 24 hour will be count as another unique visitors. Let say you have Mr. A went to your X site on 5 a.m. He browsed through your site, seeing your page and logged out. Later on, at 8 a.m, Mr. A went back to your X site to get back what he thought good for him. A unique visitor is already count there. When he came back within that 24 hours, it will be regarded as one unique visitor. Another person who visited will also counted as one. By means, a visitor is regarded as one unique visitor.

So are you ready to be proud of your site?

If you have 1000 unique visitors per day, it means you have 1000 loyal visitors coming back within the day. Isn’t that something you should really proud of? Next time, tell your visitors how many unique visitors you have per day instead of hits. Maybe they could be your next unique visitor!
